Direction

Undercurrent aims to highlight the diverse practices of nine South Australian photo-media artists currently working throughout Australia and abroad.
The exhibition is the idea of both Edward James and Greg Ackland; it’s aim is to expose emerging artists, and is (what we thought) a much needed shot in the arm for photo-media itself in South Australia. In many other Australian states we have seen the profiles of both established and emerging photo-media artists grow, the energy and focus on critical review and discussion intensify and also the increase of exhibition spaces suited to the exhibition of media-intensive works come about. This exhibition then, is our first effort to ensure that South Australia gains vital recognition in this field and can begin to open up conversation between visual arts practitioners.
The artists we selected have developed their practices beyond their various art institutions continuing to make strong and relevant works today.
It is our intent to continue this exhibition bi-annually, offering a springboard for emerging photo-media artists, and encouraging critical review and the development of an awareness, understanding and enjoyment of contemporary photo-media.

Undercurrent 2007 will feature new works by Edward James, Greg Ackland, Amy Patterson, Danielle Walpole, Mimi Kelly, Jen Brazier, Rachel McElwee, Bev Southcott, and Will Nolan.
It is being launched as an Adelaide FRINGE exhibition and will be held at the Adelaide Festival Centre in the main foyer from March 8th - 31st, 2007.
