Undercurrent 2008: Underlying Landscape

The Undercurrent artist collective aims to contribute to the ongoing development of critical and aesthetic debate concerning contemporary photo-media practice by engaging with photo-media artists, curators, writers and others across all borders (national and international).
Undercurrent seeks to develop a broader audience and create a greater understanding and awareness of various photo-media practices through the process of exhibitions, artists talks and critical writing.
For 2008 the Undercurrent collective has invited Queensland photographer Marian Drew as a special guest to participate in an exhibition exploring and constructing new relationships to landscape through photography; reflecting a changed viewpoint or orientation to landscape.
Ongoing dialogue and critical reflection among peers has been intrinsic to the development of Undercurrent 2008: Underlying Landscape. Each artist, including Marian Drew has responded to this thematic direction with new work. An introductory essay to preface the exhibition has been written by Gordon Craig, Exhibitions Coordinator, University of Queensland Art Museum.
Undercurrent is Gregory Ackland, Jen Brazier, Rachel McElwee, Edward James, Mimi Kelly, Will Nolan, Amy Patterson, Beverley Southcott and Danielle Walpole.

Rachel McElwee, Suburban Dog, 30 x 40 cm

Jen Brazier, Secret Life of Trees, 90 x 60 cm

Wendy Walker's Fringe Review

Click here to read Wendy Walker's review of the 2007 Adelaide Fringe Festival, from The Australian, Monday 2nd April 2007.
Undercurrent artists are well represented, though some of the challenges of our venue are highlighted in this article.

As a side note to this I would like to add that perhaps more emphasis on education and visual arts policies should be encouraged for all (students, artists, venues, curators, gallery directors etc)so that a clear understanding of policies and positions is held or at least available to all.
